Conditional Sentence Type 1, 2 , 3

Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. There are three types of Conditional Sentences

Definition of Conditional Sentence Type 1
Conditional sentence type 1 is a conditional sentence which is used when the result / consequence (result) of condition (condition) are likely to materialize in the future because of its realistic condition to be fulfilled.

Rumus Conditional Sentence Type 1

if  +  simple present , subject  +  will  +  bare invinitive 

Example Sentences Conditional Sentence Type 1
1.    If I see Andrew at the meeting, I'll give him your message

USE: To talk about something that is quite likely to happen in the future. It is very possible that I will see Andrew at the meeting, in which case I'll give him your message. The condition is quite likely to be fulfilled.  For presenting future plans, real possibilities, steps in an argument, points in a procedure, predictable consequences, instructions.

2.    If she has enough time, she will come to your house.
3.    If I have free time, I will go swimming.
4.     If the bell rings, I’ll go home.
5.    If you invite us, we will come to your wedding party

 Fakta : bersifat kemungkinan, probably, may be.

If  +  simple present  +  modal auxiliary (can, may, must, will) digunakam untuk menunjukan suatu kemungkinan (possibility) , izin (permission), kepastian (certainty).

If  +  simple present ,subject  +  can,may,must  +  bare infinitive
  1. If you leave now, you will arrive in time (certain result)
  2. If you leave now, you may arrive in time (possibility)
  3. If he is in hurry, he can use my car (permission)

Definition of Conditional Sentence Type 2
Conditional type 2 is used as an application of the present or present events that would occur if there were different conditions.

Rumus Conditional Sentence Type 2

If + subject + simple past, subject + would, could, might + bare infinitive

Example Sentences Conditional Sentence Type 2

1.      If my parents were alive, they would be very proud of me now.   

USE: To talk about a present situation which is impossible, a hypothetical situation. The situation cannot be fulfilled because my parents are not alive.

2.        If she changed her job, she'd be much happier.
USE: To talk about a future event which is unlikely to happen. The speaker doesn`t expect her to change her job. That is, it is unlikely that the condition will be fulfilled.

3.        If you had longer legs, you would be able to run faster
4.        If you spoke English well , he would be accepted to work here
5.        If I had a spare ticket , I would give it to himIf I prepared well for the test, I should pass.

Definition of Conditional Sentence Type 3
An application of past events or simple past tense, the incidence of which must be met in the past. Sometimes, in the past we have desires that we can not achieve. Then we want to tell a friend or someone else.

If  +  subject  +  past perfect , would/could/might   +  have  +  past participle



Example Sentences Conditional Sentence Type 3

1.      If she had worked harder, she would have passed her exams.
USE: To talk about something that might have happened in the past, but didn`t. She didn`t work hard enough and, consequently, she didn`t pass her exams.
It also expresses excuses, regrets and blame for past events.

2.        If you had gone by car, you would have arrive in bandung
3.        If you had studied english seriously, you would spoken english well
4.         If she had tried harder, she would have been successful
5.        If you had left early, you might have arrive there
6.        If had been you/inyour position

“if i had been you / in your position” used to show that what we would have done if we are in the position of others.
7.         If i had been in your position, i would have accepted her offer of help
8.          If i had been mary, i would have paid fifty million rupiah for the car
